Twas the night before Christmas and I’m locked out of my Jeep in a tee shirt at Coby … Merry f@&*ing Christmas!
By Terrance Gavan
Twas the night before Christmas
And to Lindsay I’m fled
Thoughts of a car wash
Scream through my head
My blue Jeep is spattered
With tinges of grey
OCD says to smite
All that salt, sand and clay
I stop at Old Coby
Big garage on the hill
In tee shirt and jeans
I egress to the shrill
Noise of the hoses
At work in the bays
My dog Bille Jean
Jumps into the fray
She loves to chase water
As it spurts from the tip
And inside the car
She prances and trips
And I’m not even worried
I left keys in ignition
I know that Jeep knows
By mere intuition
Never to allow me
To lock keys inside
It balks when I push the
But I forgot about Billie
And those small happy paws
Running around willy nilly
Like old Santa Claus
I finish ablutions
My Jeep looks like new
And I move to the car door
On time – Jeez – who knew?
I pull on the handle
And to my dismay
The button is down
Ôh the cuss words that spray
The bombs that emit
like water from hose
And to my iPhone I go
Joy slid to repose
I phone CAA
and then I remember
my yearly renewal
is on my credenza
And suddenly I recall
What Helena Georges once said
At PEI airport
When plans went to shreds
“Merry F$#%ing birthday!”
She said to herself
And that’s what I said
Like a fractious old elf
“Merry F&^%ing Christmas”
And I’m sorry dear Billie
And shaking my head
I must have looked kinda’ silly
Then much to my wonder
My eyes did espy
A Chrysler van
With a jolly old guy
Alone at the wheel
And he said with a grin
“Let’s figure this out
C’mon get yourself in.”
We toured down to garage
No room at that inn
Back to the car wash
We managed to spin
And I got through to the guy
With the magical sleigh
He arrived in ten minutes
No bells … That’s okay
And he had me in Jeep
With the flip of a shim
Billie jumping with joy
As I clambered in
And I stopped by to thank
My Samaritan friend
His name? Darrell Black
This thank you I send
For deep in the rush
Of Christmas night’s eve
You stooped to help
A stranger in need
And god knows I owe you
So here’s a big shout
For reminding what Christmas
Is truly about.
(Thank you Darryl, Darrell, Daryl Black. For sharing the warmth of Christmas with a stranger.)
